Your Gut Has a Brain - And It Might Be Running the Show

Eighty per cent of signals between your gut and brain travel upward, not down. Professor Tim Spector explains what that means for your mood, your energy, and your risk of dementia.

There's a nerve running from your gut to your brain called the vagus nerve. It's the longest cranial nerve in the body, and for most of medical history, scientists assumed it was mainly a top-down communication line - the brain telling the gut what to do. That assumption was wrong.

According to Professor Tim Spector, genetic epidemiologist at King's College London and co-founder of ZOE, roughly 80% of the signals travelling along the vagus nerve go from the gut up to the brain, not the other way around. Your gut isn't just digesting food. It's broadcasting information to your brain about inflammation, immune status, and neurotransmitter production - and your brain is mostly listening.

The Mini Pharmacy in Your Intestines

Your large intestine houses somewhere between 40 and 100 trillion microbes. That's not a typo. These organisms collectively produce short-chain fatty acids, neurotransmitters like serotonin, and compounds that regulate inflammation throughout your entire body. Around 70% of your immune cells sit in the gut, and the microbial community there essentially operates as what Spector calls a "mini pharmacy" - manufacturing chemicals that influence everything from mood to metabolism.

The practical implication is strange and important: when you feed your gut microbes well, they produce compounds that reduce inflammation in your brain. When you feed them poorly - through ultra-processed foods, artificial sweeteners, and emulsifiers - they produce inflammatory signals instead. Depression, anxiety, and even early markers of neurodegenerative disease have been linked to disrupted gut microbiomes in multiple studies.

The Fermented Foods Finding

In a Stanford University study, participants who consumed five portions of fermented foods daily for one month saw a 25% reduction in blood inflammation markers. A parallel group eating high-fibre diets didn't see the same anti-inflammatory effect - which surprised the researchers. The fermented foods group ate things like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha.

What's particularly interesting: even pasteurised fermented foods - where the microbes are no longer alive - still showed benefits. The health effects appear to come partly from the microbial cell wall proteins and metabolites left behind, not just the living organisms. So that jar of sauerkraut you've been ignoring at the back of the fridge is still doing something useful, even if it's been heat-treated.

Mood, Energy, and the Two-Week Shift

In ZOE's own trials, roughly half of participants reported noticeable improvements in mood and energy within two weeks of dietary changes - specifically, eating more diverse plant foods and including fermented foods regularly. Spector notes these subjective improvements showed up before measurable changes in gut composition, suggesting that even early dietary shifts produce rapid metabolic effects.

That's a useful finding if you've ever started a diet and wondered whether it's doing anything. Your microbiome takes weeks or months to significantly restructure, but the chemical outputs of your existing microbes change almost immediately in response to different food inputs.

Coffee, Flossing, and Unexpected Connections

Two findings from Spector's research that caught most people off guard: drinking two to five cups of coffee daily is associated with roughly a 25% reduction in heart disease risk, and your body harbours specific bacteria - one called Lawsonibacter - that exist solely to metabolise coffee compounds. And poor dental hygiene, specifically inadequate flossing, appears to double the risk of dementia by allowing oral bacteria to trigger inflammatory pathways that reach the brain.

The broader point isn't that coffee and flossing are magic bullets. It's that the microbiome is interconnected in ways that traditional medicine hasn't accounted for - and that small, consistent habits have measurable downstream effects on brain health.

What Actually Helps

Spector's advice is deliberately simple. Eat 30 different plant foods per week - not per day. That includes herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables. Each one feeds a different set of beneficial microbes. Add fermented foods regularly. Maintain a 12-to-14-hour overnight fast to give your gut time to recover and your circadian rhythm time to reset.

And avoid the things that reliably damage gut diversity: ultra-processed foods with long ingredient lists, artificial sweeteners, and emulsifiers like polysorbate 80 and carboxymethylcellulose, which have been shown to disrupt the gut lining in animal studies.

None of this requires a supplement subscription or a radical overhaul. It requires paying slightly more attention to variety, and slightly less attention to calorie counts.
