The Fiber Gap Your Skin Is Paying For
Most people eat about half the fibre they need. The consequences show up in your gut first, but your skin is not far behind. The gut-skin axis is real, and fibre is its primary fuel.
The average Irish adult eats about 18 grams of fibre per day. The recommended minimum is 30 grams. That 12-gram gap might sound like a nutritional footnote, but the effects ripple across your entire body, including your skin.
Fibre is not just about digestion. It feeds the bacteria in your gut that regulate inflammation, immune function, and hormone metabolism. When those bacteria do not get enough fuel, the consequences eventually show up on your face.
The Gut-Skin Axis
Your gut and your skin are in constant communication. They share the same embryonic origin, they are both major interfaces between your body and the outside world, and they are both densely populated with immune cells. When something goes wrong in one, the other often responds.
Researchers have given this relationship a name: the gut-skin axis. A 2018 review in Frontiers in Microbiology detailed how disruptions to the gut microbiome, what scientists call dysbiosis, are consistently associated with inflammatory skin conditions including acne, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis.

The mechanism works roughly like this: when your gut microbiome is healthy and diverse, it produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate. These compounds strengthen the gut lining, reduce systemic inflammation, and modulate the immune system. When your microbiome lacks diversity, the gut lining becomes more permeable, inflammatory molecules leak into the bloodstream, and your skin pays the price.
Fibre Feeds the Right Bacteria
Fibre is the primary food source for beneficial gut bacteria. Different types of fibre feed different bacterial populations, which is why diversity matters. Soluble fibre from oats, beans, and apples feeds Bifidobacteria. Resistant starch from cooled potatoes and green bananas feeds Faecalibacterium. Inulin from garlic, onions, and leeks feeds Lactobacillus.
When you eat enough varied fibre, these bacteria thrive and produce the anti-inflammatory compounds your skin needs. When fibre intake is low, opportunistic bacteria take over, inflammation increases, and skin conditions worsen.
Constipation and Skin: The Overlooked Connection
Chronic constipation, which is frequently caused by low fibre intake, has been associated with skin problems since the early 1900s. Modern research supports the connection. When transit time through the gut is slow, toxins that should be eliminated get reabsorbed. This process, called enterohepatic recirculation, increases the load on your liver and can manifest as dull skin, breakouts, and increased sensitivity.
A 2008 study in the Journal of Dermatology found that patients with acne had significantly different gut transit times compared to clear-skinned controls, and that addressing constipation improved skin outcomes in a meaningful percentage of participants.
How to Close the Fibre Gap
The goal is 30 grams daily, but getting there gradually matters. A sudden jump in fibre can cause bloating and discomfort. Add 5 grams per week until you hit the target.
Easy Fibre Additions
Start your day with porridge oats (4g fibre per serving) topped with berries (2g). Add a side of beans or lentils to lunch (6-8g per half cup). Snack on an apple with the skin on (4g) or a handful of almonds (3g). Choose wholemeal bread over white (an extra 2-3g per serving). Have a generous portion of roasted vegetables with dinner (4-6g).
The key is variety, not volume. Ten different fibre sources at moderate amounts will do more for your gut diversity, and by extension your skin, than a massive amount from one source.
